I stared at it.

“What does that open?”

Ben looked startled.

“I don’t know.”

“Where did you get it?”

“Rosie gave it to me before surgery. She said I would understand later.”

Rosie’s heart monitor quickened.

Her lips moved.

I leaned close.

“What are you saying?”

A breath passed between them.

“Blue,” she whispered.

Then she slipped back into unconsciousness.

Ben looked at me.

“Blue what?”

I knew.

When we were children, Rosie had called our mother’s old lake cottage the blue house, even after my father painted it white.

It had been empty for years.

My father refused to sell it.

Daniel was released from official duty after arresting my father without notifying his superiors, but he agreed to drive us to the lake cottage.
