My groom smashed my face into the cake during the cake cutting as a “joke” — I was on the verge of tears when my brother shocked everyone.

Ryan didn’t yell.

He didn’t throw a punch.

He walked straight up to Ed, calm and quiet, and said four words.

“We need to talk.”

Ed laughed it off.

“Relax, man.

It’s just a joke.”

“It’s not a joke,” Ryan said.

“And you know it.”

The room went completely still.

I was still wiping frosting from my eyes when I saw Ryan pull out his phone and hold the screen up to Ed’s face.

Ed’s smile disappeared instantly.

Whatever was on that screen — Ed recognized it.

His face went pale.

“Where did you get that?” Ed said, his voice dropping low.

“Doesn’t matter where I got it,” Ryan said.

“What matters is that she deserves to know the truth before this goes any further.”

Ed grabbed Ryan’s arm.

“Put that away.

Right now.”

Ryan didn’t move.

Mom stepped forward.

“Ryan — what is that?

What’s happening?”

Ryan looked at me, and for the first time all day, his eyes were full of something I hadn’t seen before.

It wasn’t anger.

It was grief.

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner,” he said.

“I thought I was protecting you.”

Then he turned the phone toward me.
