For a moment, I just stood there, trying to process what I had seen.
The realization was somehow worse than the uncertainty.
Because now I had a new question:
This evening, I walked into my girlfriend’s bathroom and spotted this on the floor. I’ve been sitting here for 30 minutes, staring at it and trying to work out what it is.
What exactly was it?
I didn’t want to touch it.
I didn’t want to get any closer.
So I did what most people would probably do in that situation—I started searching for answers.
I took a closer look from a distance and compared what I was seeing with pictures online. I searched descriptions of dark, soft-bodied creatures that could appear in damp environments.
The more images I looked at, the more familiar the shape became.
And then I found it.
A leech.
My heart sank.
A leech.
A small, blood-feeding creature that I had always associated with ponds, streams, muddy water, and places far away from an ordinary bathroom.
Yet there it was.
On the floor.
Inside the room I had considered completely safe and familiar.
Suddenly, all of my earlier thoughts came rushing back.
The damp floor.
The drain.
The pipes.
The water.
I started wondering where it had come from.
Was it carried in accidentally?
Could it have come through a drain or plumbing opening?
Had it been brought inside on someone’s clothing or footwear?
I couldn’t know for sure.ad
And somehow, not knowing made it worse.
After that experience, the bathroom no longer felt quite the same.
Every time I walked in, I found myself looking down at the floor.
I started checking the corners without even thinking about it.
I noticed damp areas that I had previously ignored.
The drain suddenly seemed much more interesting than it ever had before.
Even a small dark mark on the floor could make me stop and take a second look.
It was strange how quickly something so small could change the way I perceived an entire room.
The leech itself wasn’t enormous.
It wasn’t some terrifying creature from a horror movie.
But that wasn’t really the point.ad
What frightened me was the unexpectedness of it.
I had never considered that I might encounter something alive on my bathroom floor. I had assumed that the room was clean, controlled, and predictable.
Then, in the middle of an ordinary moment, something completely unexpected appeared.
And once your mind realizes that something can be there, it becomes difficult to stop looking for it.
Every shadow seems darker.
Every wet surface seems suspicious.
Every unusual shape catches your attention.
