My Neighbor Constantly Borrowed My Appliances – When She Returned My Mixer Dirty and Broken, I Taught Her a Lesson

When I arrived, he placed it on the counter and plugged it in.

Then he flipped the switch.

The motor started.

Smooth.

Steady.

Familiar.

That sound filled the shop.

And for one ridiculous second, I almost cried.

Greg patted the top.

“You’ve got plenty of life left in this thing.”

“Really?”

“Take care of it and it might outlive both of us.”

I laughed.

That weekend, Sophie and I made my mother’s Sunday chocolate cake.

Nothing fancy.

Just the recipe she had made dozens of times when I was growing up.

Sophie measured the flour.

I cracked the eggs.

Then I turned on the mixer.

The paddle began moving.

Smoothly.

Sophie smiled.

“Sounds normal.”

“It does.”

I stood there listening.

For a moment, I could picture my mother in her kitchen.

Same machine.

Same motor.

Same Sunday routine.

Same little chip in the enamel where Dad had dropped the measuring cup.

Some people would have thrown it away.

Bought a shiny new one.

Maybe Denise would have.

But the point was never whether I could afford another mixer.

I could.

The point was that I couldn’t buy another one that had spent thirty-six years in my family.

Denise never asked to borrow it again.

In fact, she stopped borrowing anything for several months.

Then one afternoon in October, she knocked on my door.

She pointed toward the garage.

“Do you still have the pressure washer?”

“Yes.”

She sighed.

“Do you still have the forms?”
