The story of an elderly woman dying alone in a motel is heartbreaking for obvious reasons. A motel room is supposed to be temporary—a place someone occupies for a night, a weekend, or perhaps a few weeks while traveling or waiting for a more permanent home.
It is not supposed to become the final address of a human life.
Yet behind such a story can be a much larger issue: the vulnerability of older adults who become isolated, lose access to stable housing, struggle financially, or refuse assistance because accepting it feels like surrendering the last piece of independence they possess.
