PART 2: THE CRACKS BEHIND THE DOOR
I left before dawn and drove three hours so I’d make it in time for breakfast with the children. The whole way, I rehearsed. The games we’d play. The bedtime stories. The sound of Lily’s laugh, which I hadn’t heard in person in months.
When I finally turned into Jason and Melissa’s driveway, I sat in the car for a moment, smoothing my hair with hands that weren’t quite steady.
“You’re here for them,” I told myself. “Just be here for them.”
The house was large, tall windows, a lawn so green it looked painted on. I stepped out into the cool morning air with my purse over my arm.
The front door opened before I reached it. Melissa stood there in silk pajamas, phone already glowing in her hand.
“Margaret.” Her smile was wide. Her eyes were somewhere else entirely. “You made it. Come in, come in.”
“Where are the little ones?”
“Still asleep.” She waved a hand toward the hallway. “Go ahead and get settled in the guest room.”
I stepped inside, suitcase bumping against my leg, and breathed in — expecting the smell of a full, busy home. What I noticed instead was dust, a thin gray film along the side table I passed in the hall. A heap of laundry slumped in the corner like it had given up.
That was only the opening line of it.
The kitchen sink held a small mountain of crusted dishes. The bathroom, when I found it, hadn’t seen a scrub brush in what looked like weeks. I stood in the doorway a moment, suitcase still in my hand, and understood — slowly, the way you understand a bruise is there before you remember bumping into anything — that this wasn’t a busy household running a little behind.
This was a household that had stopped trying.
I told myself it wasn’t my business how Melissa kept her home. I had come for Lily and Noah. And if I was honest with myself, some small, uninvited part of me had already decided that a clean, cared-for house was part of what those two children deserved, whether anyone had asked me to provide it or not.
I just didn’t yet know how literally I’d be asked to provide it.
