My family invited me to Thanksgiving, but my mother sent me straight to the kitchen to cook while everyone else celebrated. I spent two hours cooking as they called my siblings the pride of the family. Then the door opened. A billionaire CEO walked in, took my red, tired hand, kissed it and said, “Sorry, darling, I’m late.” My family froze when he added, “She’s my fiancée. Why is my future wife serving you?”

“You are cutting me off?”

“I am ending the arrangement where everyone lives comfortably because someone else is always paying.”

“You are a monster.”

“No,” I said as I stood. “I am simply no longer volunteering to be the family sacrifice.”

The turkey had gone cold. Wine stained the white linen, and the lavish Thanksgiving dinner looked suddenly absurd.

Julian waited near the doorway and offered me his arm.

For the first time, I did not look back because I wanted their approval.

I looked back because I knew I no longer needed it.

Part 5: The Life I Built Beyond Their Approval

I walked around the table and joined Julian near the doorway. He offered me his arm, and I took it.

For a moment, I looked back.

Dad sat hunched over the contract he had signed. Ryan stared at the floor. Natalie wiped mascara from her cheeks, and Mom looked smaller than I had ever seen her.

For years, I had imagined revenge.
