“Probably not. Grace, can you stop checking up on me? I’m working. I don’t need you calling me constantly.”
The words hurt.
But by then, I was practiced at swallowing hurt.
“Okay,” I said quietly. “Love you.”
He didn’t answer.
I set my phone on the kitchen counter beside Sophie’s bottle.
Then I noticed the screen was still lit.
The call timer was running.
Elon hadn’t hung up.
I almost ended the call myself.
Then I heard a woman laugh.
My hand stopped.
The laugh was close.
Comfortable.
Intimate.
Then Elon spoke again.
Only now his voice was completely different.
Relaxed.
Warm.
The version of him I had not heard directed at me in a very long time.
“She’s driving me crazy,” he said. “Always asking when I’m coming home, sending baby pictures, checking up on me. I just want her to leave me alone.”
My fingers went cold around the phone.
The woman said something I couldn’t understand.
Elon laughed.
Then came the sentence that ended my marriage before either of us had signed a single document.
“I can barely stand being around her anymore.”
He continued.
He said he didn’t want me.
He said he planned to divorce me.
Then he promised the other woman that once the timing was right, he would marry her.
Finally, I heard them kiss.
I stood motionless in my own kitchen.
Sophie reached for my hair and made a little sound against my shoulder.
My husband was telling another woman that the wife caring for his newborn daughter was nothing more than an inconvenience.
Very carefully, I ended the call.
And strangely, I didn’t cry.
Something inside me simply became quiet.
Clear.
That evening, Elon came home carrying flowers.
Cheap grocery-store flowers wrapped in plastic.
He kissed my forehead.
“Missed my girls.”
I looked at the same man I had heard hours earlier promising another woman a future.
Then I smiled.
“We missed you too.”
I put the flowers in water.
And I said nothing.
Because in that moment, I realized something important.
If I confronted him immediately, I would be giving him control of what happened next.
He would deny it.
Minimize it.
Tell me I had misunderstood.
