MY HUSBAND BROUGHT HIS MISTRESS HOME TO LIVE WITH. THAT NIGHT, HE SAID, “THIS IS AN OPEN MARRIAGE. YOU HAVE TO ACCEPT IT.” I DIDN’T ARGUE. I JUST MADE ONE PHONE CALL

There was a pause.

Then a cold voice replied, “I’m ten minutes away.”

I ended the call.

Vanessa laughed nervously. “What was that?”

“Nothing dramatic.”

I went back to the kitchen.

Exactly fifteen minutes later, the doorbell rang.

Daniel answered it.

A tall man wearing a charcoal coat stepped inside.

Vanessa turned around.

Her champagne glass fell from her hand and shattered across my hardwood floor.

All the color vanished from her face.

Then she screamed.

“That’s my husband!”

And for the first time that evening, Daniel’s smile disappeared….

The man standing in the doorway was Michael Reeves.

Vanessa’s husband of six years.

Daniel looked from Michael to Vanessa.

“Your what?”

Vanessa backed into the dining table.

“Michael, I can explain.”

“Good,” Michael said. “Because I’d love to hear why my wife has been telling another man she’s divorced.”

Daniel’s eyes widened.

“She told me the divorce was final.”

Michael gave a short laugh.

“There was never even a filing.”

Vanessa turned toward Daniel. “He’s lying.”

Michael reached inside his coat and put a folder on the table.

“Marriage certificate. Joint mortgage. Tax returns from this year.”

Daniel opened it.

His hands started trembling.

I stayed beside the kitchen island.

Vanessa finally turned to me.

“You knew?”

“For four days.”

Her mouth fell open.

Daniel slammed the folder closed.

“You investigated her?”

“No,” I said. “I investigated you.”

That shut him up.

For months, Daniel had told friends I was “too domestic” to understand his business.

What he rarely mentioned was that before I married him, I’d spent nine years working as a forensic accountant specializing in fraud and asset tracing.

I left corporate work when my mother became ill.

Daniel apparently assumed my brain had stopped working too.

It hadn’t.

Three weeks earlier, I’d discovered Daniel transferred $180,000 from our joint investment account into his company.

From there, $62,000 went into an account Vanessa controlled.

Another $28,000 paid for jewelry, hotels, and the luxury apartment Daniel claimed was for “corporate clients.”

Michael looked at me.

“You found the transfers?”

I nodded.

Vanessa’s expression shifted.

Her arrogance gave way to fear.

Daniel pointed at me. “That money was mine too.”

“Partly,” I said. “Which is why my attorney advised me not to stop you.”

“Your attorney?”

“I needed a clean record.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

Vanessa suddenly grabbed her purse.

“I’m leaving.”

Michael blocked the doorway.

“I’m not stopping you. But you’re not taking my car.”

She froze.

He raised a key fob.

“And before you ask, yes, I froze our joint accounts this afternoon.”

Vanessa turned toward me.

“You planned this.”

“No. You planned this. I documented it.”
