I Came Home Three Days After Giving Birth and Found 22 Relatives Living in My House. Then I Learned My Husband Had Planned Something Much Worse.

Three days after giving birth, I came home expecting darkness, fresh sheets, pain medication, and quiet.

Instead, the front door stood wide open.

Music rattled the windows.

Eleven cars crowded the street.

And somewhere inside my house, a man was murdering “Sweet Caroline” while twenty-two people shouted the chorus back at him.

For one second, I genuinely thought Caleb had brought me to the wrong house.

Then I noticed my planter wedged beneath the front door.

My planter.

My house.

My nightmare.

I stopped on the porch with our three-day-old daughter, Grace, asleep in the carrier against my chest.

Every breath pulled painfully at my incision.

I had undergone an emergency C-section less than seventy-two hours earlier. I had barely slept, barely eaten, and still felt as though my body belonged to the hospital.

I looked at my husband.

“Caleb.”

His expression changed instantly.

But he wasn’t surprised.

He looked guilty.

That was the first warning.

“Just let me explain.”

I stayed where I was.

Inside, red and silver balloons drifted above the foyer. A folding table was buried beneath trays of barbecue, pasta salad, wings, chips, desserts, and soda bottles.

Someone had hung a banner above the fireplace.

WELCOME HOME, BABY GRACE!

My father-in-law appeared from the kitchen holding a red plastic cup.

“There she is!”

Ron Bailey was sixty-three, loud, broad-shouldered, and completely convinced that boundaries were merely suggestions invented by people who didn’t understand family.

He spread his arms wide.

“Momma’s home!”

Everyone turned.

Then applause broke out.

Grace stirred.

I flinched.

“Please,” I whispered. “Please don’t.”

Ron laughed.
