The night before our first real road trip in thirty years, an email appeared on my screen with a single brutal word:
CANCELED.
Ten minutes later, I discovered my husband hadn’t canceled our vacation because something urgent had happened.
He had canceled it because he had decided my time belonged to his sister.
I called Daniel immediately.
“What happened?”
There was a pause, followed by the sound of ice knocking against a glass.
“I canceled it,” he said casually. “Melissa needs you to watch her kids.”
I stared at the half-packed suitcase sitting on our bed.
“You canceled my vacation without asking me?”
Daniel sighed as if I were the unreasonable one.
“It’s just a trip, Claire. Family comes first.”
My voice dropped.
“Then why aren’t you staying?”
Silence.
Finally, he answered.
“Because I already promised Greg I’d go golfing in Scottsdale.”
I laughed.
Not because anything about it was funny.
But because after thirty-two years of marriage, something inside me finally broke cleanly instead of wearing down a little at a time.
The road trip had been my idea.
