Andrew slipped another sheet from the slim folder and angled it across the patio so Mom and Dad could see it.
Dad’s eyes dropped first.
Mom reached for his arm.
Grandma Margaret did not raise her voice.
She simply waited until my father had read enough to understand why she had brought Andrew to a pool party.
“What is that?” Rachel asked.
Andrew answered her without looking away from Dad.
“A record of the gift.”
Dad looked up sharply. “What gift?”
Grandma’s expression barely changed.
“The cello.”
Lucy was still holding my hand.
I felt her fingers tighten.
Dad looked back at the page as if a different sentence might appear if he read it twice.
Grandma had documented the antique cello when she gave it to Lucy.
The page listed the instrument’s identifying details, including the same number Dad had provided to the collector when he arranged the sale.
It was dated before the cello left Grandma’s music room.
And Lucy was named as the recipient.
Mom shook her head quickly. “Margaret, she’s a child.”
Grandma turned toward her.
“Yes.”
Mom waited.
Grandma didn’t add anything.
That somehow made it worse.
Rachel folded her arms. “Kids can’t make decisions about an $87,000 antique.”
“I didn’t ask Lucy to sell it,” Grandma said. “You did that part yourselves.”
Dad’s voice hardened. “This proves you intended for her to have it. It doesn’t mean Emily gets to come in here and accuse us of—”
Andrew interrupted him gently.
“It says more than that.”
He tapped the page once.
Dad stopped.
Andrew explained that Grandma had not merely told the family she wanted Lucy to have the instrument someday.
She had transferred it to her.
The distinction mattered.
A lot.
Grandma looked directly at my father.
Then she finally finished the sentence that had been hanging over our family for six weeks.
“The cello was not mine when you sold it.”
Dad went still.
