PART 5 — WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED
Neither of them has been caught and I want that clear, because everybody expects an arrest.
The envelope went to the police on the Friday afternoon along with both sets of footage. There is a file, it is open, and it has been eight months.
What did happen is this.
Haverly’s paid me back the hundred and sixty. It was in my account on the Monday and Vaughn did it himself from the float and put it through as a correction.
They found Mireille. It took the owners about three weeks and she was working at a coffee place in Denhaven and she did not want to come in and talk, which I completely understood, and they paid her the four hundred and forty by transfer.
The policy changed in the October. It is on the wall in the staff corridor now, laminated, four lines. A walkout is a business loss. It is never taken from a server. It is reported the same night.
Vaughn wrote it. He also read it out at a staff meeting, which took him about forty seconds and which I have been told by two people took more out of him than that sounds.
He is still the manager. A lot of people think he should not be and I am not going to argue with them.
My position, which I have had to work out for myself, is that he is the only person in this whole thing who did something that cost him, at a moment when doing nothing was completely available.
That does not undo the eleventh of March. Mireille lost a job at nineteen over four hundred and forty dollars that a camera had already explained.
Your table, your problem — don’t make a scene on my floor.
He said that in a full dining room with my tip book in his hand, and thirty people went back to their starters in about two seconds.
Eight months earlier, two people sat in that same corner booth and worked out, from watching that room for an hour and a half, exactly what kind of place it was.
They did not write down that our food was good or that our wine list was expensive.
They wrote down one line about the manager.
