MY BIOLOGICAL FATHER GAVE ME A CAR FOR MY 17TH BIRTHDAY AND TOLD MY STEPDAD, “NOW HE KNOWS WHO HIS REAL FATHER IS.”
I WANTED TO HUMILIATE HIM BACK — INSTEAD, I CALLED MY STEPDAD OVER AND TAUGHT THE WHOLE FAMILY WHAT A FATHER ACTUALLY IS.
Chapter 1: The Car in the Driveway
My biological father gave me a car for my 17th birthday, then told my stepdad, “Now he knows who his real father is.” I wanted to humiliate him back — but then I came up with a lesson the whole family would remember.
My name is Ethan. My biological father left when I was three. For fourteen years it was Mom and me, and money was the thing we talked about most and never out loud.
She met Ray when I was sixteen. He had two kids of his own and was paying child support, and we became five people living on money for three — and he never once made me feel like the part that made it harder. He came to every game, including the season I never left the bench. He sat across the kitchen table doing chemistry he didn’t understand. When I said I was quitting, he said, “Read it to me again. We’re not stopping.” He and Mom quietly opened a college account for me and put in whatever was left each month, which some months was nothing.
Then on my seventeenth birthday, my father showed up. Fourteen years gone. He walked me to a brand-new car in the driveway. “Happy birthday, son.” Then he turned toward the porch where Ray stood, and said it: “Now he knows who his real father is.”
Ray looked at the ground.
