MY HUSBAND FORGOT TO HANG UP—SIX DAYS AFTER I HEARD HIM SAY, “I HATE HER,” I GAVE HIM AN ANNIVERSARY SURPRISE IN FRONT OF BOTH FAMILIES

was on maternity leave with our newborn daughter, Maya.
He barely helped with anything.
Feedings.
Diapers.
Night wakings.
Doctor appointments.
According to Julian, work always came first.
His “late meetings” had become almost nightly.
One afternoon, exhausted after barely sleeping for two days, I called to ask whether he would be home for dinner.
“Probably not,” he snapped.
Then he sighed.
“Can you stop checking up on me? I’m working.”
I swallowed the hurt.
“Okay.”
A pause.
“Love you.”
He didn’t answer.
I placed my phone beside Maya’s bottle.
Then I noticed something.
The call timer was still moving.
Julian hadn’t hung up.
I reached toward the screen.
Then I heard a woman laugh.
My hand froze.
Not a coworker’s polite laugh.
Soft.
Close.
Intimate.
Then Julian spoke.
“She’s driving me insane.”
My heartbeat stopped.
The woman murmured something I couldn’t make out.
Julian continued:
“Constant pictures of the baby.”
“Where are you?”
“When are you coming home?”
He laughed.
“I just want her to leave me alone.”
My fingers went numb.
The woman asked:
“Then why are you still with her?”
Julian answered without hesitation.
“Because divorcing her while she’s on maternity leave would make me look like a monster.”
Another laugh.
Then:
“Of course I hate her.”
I stopped breathing.
“I barely touch her anymore.”
The woman said something.
Julian lowered his voice.
“Just wait.”
“I’ll divorce her.”
“And then I’ll marry you.”
Then I heard a kiss.
Clear enough that there was no room left for denial.
I ended the call.
For several minutes, I stood completely still in my kitchen.
Maya started crying from her bassinet.
That snapped me back.
I picked her up.
Held her against my chest.
And suddenly something inside me became very calm.
I did not call Julian back.
I did not confront him.
I did not send angry messages.
I didn’t even cry until Maya fell asleep.
That evening, Julian came home carrying grocery-store flowers.
He kissed my forehead.
“Missed my girls.”
I looked at him.
The same mouth that had said he hated me only hours earlier was smiling like nothing had happened.
I smiled back.
“We missed you too.”
For the next six days, I said nothing.
I watched.
