The police could not arrest anyone simply for asking questions or making an ugly lie during a phone call.
But the attempted lock change, false representation, phone account activity, and other records gave Dad plenty to document.
He asked the officers to make an incident report.
Then he called his attorney again.
By noon, every old authorization Vanessa had over any account was being revoked.
His banking passwords were changed.
His phone account was locked down.
His garage code was reset.
The old spare key Vanessa had carried for years was canceled because Dad’s door lock was electronic.
And the truck evaluator was informed, in writing, that nobody except Dad had authority to sell anything.
Vanessa stood near her SUV crying.
“This is insane.”
Dad looked at her.
“No. What happened at breakfast was insane.”
She wrapped her arms around herself.
“I was angry.”
“You announced my death.”
“I thought—”
“No, you didn’t.”
His voice remained quiet.
“You planned.”
That silenced her.
Then Vanessa said something I had not expected.
“You always favored Natalie.”
I almost interrupted.
Dad stopped me.
“No.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled again.
“She gets to move away. She gets to call whenever she wants. She gets to show up and be the hero. I stayed here.”
Dad stared at her.
“Stayed here doing what?”
Her mouth opened.
He continued.
