«There’s a reason I bought two identical bracelets.»
He swallowed hard.
«But once you know the truth, you probably won’t ever want to see me again.»
I felt my fingers go cold.
Because I could tell from his face:
the second bracelet wasn’t meant for the woman I had been thinking of.

I felt as though my entire body had turned to stone.
“Tell me.”
He placed his hands on the table.
I had never seen him like that.
“I made a mistake. The biggest mistake of my life. But I was afraid. You had lost a lot of blood. The doctors said you needed rest. Your mother convinced me. She said that at least one of the babies should have a chance to live. And you needed to be given the opportunity to continue living a peaceful life.”
A peaceful life.
I wanted to scream.
I wanted to smash everything around me.
But I could only ask one question.
“Did she survive?”
Martin reached into his coat pocket and took out a photograph.
It showed a young woman.
About twenty-six years old.
Dark hair.
My eyes.
My smile.
My face.
