Inside were several letters tied together with a faded green ribbon, old financial records, and a photograph taken in front of the house Frank and I had shared for eleven years.
Frank stood beside his first wife, Linda. Between them was a younger woman whose face I recognized almost immediately.
I turned the photograph over.
Written across the back were three words that left me speechless:
“June. 1987.”
June was my mother.
For more than a decade, I had listened to Frank’s grown children suggest that I had married their father because of the house.
Now, I was holding evidence that my own mother had been connected to that same property long before Frank and I ever met.
The records revealed a story Frank had apparently carried with him for decades.
In 1987, his construction business had experienced serious financial difficulties after a developer failed to pay him for completed work. Frank and Linda were struggling with unpaid expenses, equipment loans, and an unfinished property that was in danger of being lost.
My mother, June, had recently inherited $32,000.
According to the handwritten agreement in the box, she gave most of that money to Frank to help him keep the business and property moving forward.
The agreement stated that Frank would repay her with interest when his finances improved. If he could not fully repay her, June would eventually receive a twenty-five percent interest in the property.
Frank did make several repayments.
But the records showed that the arrangement was never completely settled.
After my parents separated, my mother moved away with me. Over the years, Frank apparently tried to contact her. Several letters were returned, and some checks were never deposited.
Then I found a letter from Linda.
She explained that she had known my mother and that I had even visited their home when I was a small child.
I had no memory of it.
