My Husband Called Himself a “Hands-On Dad” — So At His Mother’s Birthday Party, I Handed Him the Chance to Prove It Was True
My husband loved telling people that parenting in our house was a perfect fifty-fifty split.
Everyone believed him.
Especially his mother.
Then her birthday handed me the perfect opportunity to let him prove it.
Nathan and I had been married for seven years, and somewhere along the way I’d learned there’s a wide, quiet gap between being an involved father and simply looking like one from across a dinner table.
We had two kids. Ava was four, all elbows and opinions. Owen was eight months old and cutting his first teeth, which meant nobody in our house had slept properly in weeks.
I loved being their mother. What I didn’t love was being the default setting — the person everyone assumed would handle it, whatever “it” happened to be, without anyone bothering to ask.
Nathan and I both worked full-time. Somehow meals, baths, diaper changes, preschool drop-offs, pediatrician appointments, laundry, bedtime routines, and every single one of Owen’s nighttime wake-ups had drifted onto my side of the ledger, one small excuse at a time.
Nathan always had one ready.
