Chapter 1 – The Call I Will Never Forget
My ten-year-old daughter called me sobbing from a lake resort where she was vacationing with her father and his new wife. Two hours later, I found her hiding in that cabin with a chunk of her hair cut off and the word LIAR scrawled across her hoodie in thick black marker.
By the time the sun went down that night, I knew exactly why they’d told her not to call anyone — and exactly which one of them had let it happen to protect himself.
Marcus and I had been divorced for a year. He married Vanessa three months later. We’d agreed, for Ellie’s sake, to keep things smooth between us — no fighting in front of her, no dragging her into grown-up problems.
Ellie handled it better than either of us deserved. She was quiet and watchful, older than her age in the way kids get when they’ve learned to read a room before they’ve learned long division. Even when Vanessa kept angling for her to call her “New Mom,” Ellie would just smile that polite little smile and steer the conversation somewhere else. She never made it a fight. She just never gave in.
So when Marcus said he wanted to take her to Pine Hollow Lake for four days before school started, I said yes without hesitating.
At the car, I crouched down and kissed her forehead.
