A woman cut ahead of my elderly father at airport security and called him “grandpa” — then two pilots saw him and immediately stopped.
My 81-year-old father hadn’t flown in almost twenty years.
So when he agreed to come to my daughter’s wedding in Denver, I promised I’d stay beside him the entire way.
The security line was packed.
Dad moved slowly, leaning on his cane while trying to remove his jacket.
That’s when a woman in an expensive suit stepped directly in front of him.
“We’re all going to miss our flights waiting for Grandpa.”
Dad quietly stepped back.
I was furious.
“Excuse me.
He was ahead of you.”
She rolled her eyes.
“Then Grandpa should learn how airports work.”
Dad touched my arm.
“Let it go.”
But suddenly, two uniformed pilots walking past us stopped.
Both were staring at Dad.
One whispered something to the other.
Then they turned around.
The older pilot approached slowly.
“Sir…
is your name Thomas?”
Dad’s face changed.
“Yes.”
The pilot immediately removed his cap.
So did the other one.
The rude woman laughed.
“What, is Grandpa famous?”
Neither pilot even glanced at her.
The older one stared at the small silver wings pinned inside Dad’s jacket.
“I haven’t seen those in thirty-four years.”
My stomach tightened.
Dad had always told us he’d worked in airport maintenance before retiring.
Nothing more.
Then a security supervisor hurried over.
He looked at Dad…
and froze.
Within minutes, they were moving us out of the security line.
“Dad, what’s happening?”
He wouldn’t answer.
The older pilot led us toward a restricted door.
But before opening it, Dad suddenly grabbed his wrist.
