He pointed toward me.
“Jessica made the call.”
Then he looked at Tristan.
“And people showed up because they care about you.”
Linda’s face tightened.
“I was trying to help him.”
Tristan laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“You keep saying that.”

“No, Mom. You decided you knew better than us.”
Linda opened her mouth.
Tristan continued.
“You canceled our reception without telling us. You let Jessica find out one hour before the ceremony.”
“I was protecting your finances.”
“You were controlling my wedding.”
Linda looked wounded.
It almost made me feel sorry for her.
Almost.
Then Tristan said something quieter.
“And apparently, you’ve been controlling my family, too.”
That landed harder.
Linda looked at Richard.
Then at her son.
For a moment, the confidence disappeared.
“I had reasons.”
“I’m sure you did,” Tristan said. “But you don’t get to make every decision for me because you’re convinced your reason is good enough.”
She stared at him.
I could see how difficult it was for him to say those words.
This was not only about a reception.
It was years of swallowed frustration coming out in one conversation.
Richard stepped back.
“This is your wedding. I don’t want today turning into a trial.”
Tristan nodded.
Then he faced Linda.
“You can stay.”
She looked surprised.
“But you’re going to apologize to Jessica.”
Linda stiffened.
“Tristan.”
“I’m serious.”
I squeezed his hand.
He looked at me.
I did not need a grand apology.
I did not need Linda humiliated in front of seventy people.
I just needed her to understand that what she had done mattered.
Linda looked at me for a long time.
Finally, she said, “I’m sorry I canceled the reception.”
It was not perfect.
Her voice was tight.
Her pride was still very much alive.
But it was the first apology I had ever heard her give me.
I nodded.
“Thank you.”
