I took a solo cruise after my husband divorced me—on Day Four, a stranger sat at my table and whispered, “I’m the reason your husband left you.” Then he reached into his pocket.

My husband asked for a divorce after twenty-two years of marriage.

No affair.

No screaming matches.

One evening, he came home from work, silently placed the papers on the kitchen table, and said,

“I don’t think we’re meant to grow old together.”

That was it.

I truly thought he was joking.

He wasn’t.

When I pleaded with him to tell me why, he only repeated,

“We’ve grown apart.

We’re too different now.”

He gave everyone else the same explanation.

Friends.

Family.

Our grown daughter.

No one believed it.

Neither did I.

People don’t throw away twenty-two happy years because they suddenly wake up feeling different.

There had to be another reason.

I simply couldn’t find it.
