I Was Bruised, Braced, And Half-Awake When My Sister Unplugged My Heart Monitor To Prove I Was Dramatic. My Mother Laughed Beside Her. I Said Nothing — Then The Nurse Stepped Through The Door…
The first thing I heard was Tessa’s voice.
Not gentle. Not worried. Not the kind of voice you pray for when you wake up in a hospital bed with your ribs on fire and your mouth tasting like plastic, metal, and old fear.
It came sharp through the steady beep of the heart monitor, cutting right through the cold chemical smell of the room before I even understood where I was. Fluorescent light pressed against my eyelids. The blanket felt rough over my legs. Somewhere near my left hand, tubing pulled softly every time I tried to take a breath.
“She does this,” my sister said. “She always makes everything bigger than it is.”
I tried to open my eyes, but my whole body felt packed with wet sand. My ribs burned under the thin hospital gown. My left arm was strapped tight against my chest in a sling, and one leg was braced beneath the blanket, heavy as if it belonged to someone else.
