“I was in labor,” I said.
Elise’s face crumpled.
“I didn’t know he threw you out.”
“But you knew I had given birth. And you came anyway.”
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
There was no comfort in her honesty.
Part 5: Another Name in the File
General Hayes told me I did not have to continue the conversation. But some doors, once opened, could not be closed gently.
“Did Mark know about the money?” I asked Elise.
She hesitated.
“Yes. He knew there was an inheritance. Not the exact amount, at least not from me.”
My fingers tightened around Grace’s blanket.
“Then who told him the amount?”
Elise shook her head. “I don’t know. I knew it was significant, but not twenty million. He said the number first.”
General Hayes looked sharply at her.
Something cold moved through the room.
Mark had not learned everything from Elise.
Which meant there was another leak.
Or another secret.
The next two days passed in fragments. Doctors checked my recovery. Nurses helped me learn how to feed Grace. Mrs. Rivera arrived with clean clothes, soup, and tears she tried to hide.
When she saw Grace, her face softened.
“Oh, mi niña,” she whispered. “She is perfect.”
I tried to smile. “She has good timing. Arrived just in time for the worst family meeting imaginable.”
Mrs. Rivera gave me a look.
“Your daughter arrived when you needed courage.”
That stayed with me.
Courage did not always feel brave. Sometimes it felt like signing hospital paperwork with shaking hands. Sometimes it felt like refusing to answer Mark’s calls while he left messages swinging between apology and accusation.
