I had just been the last person told.

And then he said the sentence that still wakes me up.

“This only worked because you agreed.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

He blinked, like he had said too much.

I felt the room tilt.

“You said yes,” he whispered. “After the doctor told you.”

I was shaking my head before he finished.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“I would never—”

“You did.”

He stood up slowly. “You were crying. You kept saying we couldn’t lose everything. You asked what my parents would do if they cut us off. You said Max deserved stability. You said if Nicole wanted money and didn’t want the baby, then maybe—”

“Stop.”

But he didn’t.

“You said no one had to know.”

I couldn’t breathe.
