Rachel watched me carefully.
After Emma went to bed, she closed the bedroom door and returned to the living room.
“What are you not telling her?”
I showed her the anonymous photograph and the message about Claire’s death.
Rachel read it twice.
Her face did not change immediately.
That frightened me more than shock would have.
“What?” I asked.
She set the phone down.
“Claire called me three days before she went to the hospital.”
“You never told me that.”
“You were overseas.”
“I spoke to her during those three days.”
“She did not want you distracted.”
“Distracted by what?”
Rachel walked to the window.
“She said someone had been following her.”
The room seemed to tilt around that sentence.
“Who?”
“She didn’t know.”
“And you said nothing?”
“I begged her to call the police. She said she had no proof.”
