“He was involved, but he was not in charge.”
“Who was?”
Thomas studied me.
“Claire never proved it.”
“Did she believe her life was in danger?”
“She believed someone wanted to frighten her.”
“That is not what I asked.”
Thomas looked toward the photographs.
“Yes.”
The answer settled between us.
Mercer leaned forward.
“Do you have evidence related to her death?”
“No.”
“Then why did someone tell Daniel it was not an illness?”
“Because people confuse suspicious timing with proof.”
His response was careful.
Too careful.
I placed the photograph of the blue folder on the table.
“Where is this?”
Thomas’s hand tightened around his cane.
“You should not have that image.”
“Where is the folder?”
“I don’t know.”
“What does C-17 mean?”
He closed his eyes briefly.
“It was Claire’s witness file.”
