Diana looked toward the rear doors.
“It’s still at the estate?”
“I think so.”
“Was the key inside?”
Audrey nodded.
Diana immediately called one of the investigators.
“Locate Audrey Vale’s handbag in the east bridal restroom. Do not open it until it is photographed and logged. I want the security key isolated.”
She ended the call.
Audrey felt another contraction beginning.
“This doesn’t make sense.”
“Don’t think about it now.”
“Someone used my credentials.”
“We’ll find out who.”
“What was in the spreadsheet?”
Diana hesitated.
That hesitation frightened Audrey more than the answer.
“Payments linked to three public construction grants,” she said. “The funds passed through Northstar Restoration and then into private investment accounts.”
“Whose accounts?”
“One belonged to Julian.”
Audrey stared at the ceiling.
“And the others?”
“Beatrice Sterling.”
Diana paused.
“And Owen Mercer.”
