“Then we prepare for delivery.”
The answer was gentle but honest.
Audrey nodded.
A nurse guided Diana away while the medical team moved around the bed.
Clothes were changed.
Monitors were attached.
Questions were asked.
The baby’s heartbeat filled the room in rapid, steady beats.
Audrey began to cry.
Not loudly.
The tears simply slipped sideways into her hair.
The nurse beside her smiled.
“That’s a good sound.”
Audrey listened.
For the first time that night, something inside her loosened.
Her son was still fighting.
So would she.
Two hours later, the contractions had slowed.
Not stopped, but slowed.
Medication moved through an IV in Audrey’s hand. A fetal monitor curved around her abdomen. The room lights had been dimmed, and the blinds were closed against the dark city beyond the windows.
Dr. Patel stood beside the bed.
“We’ve gained time,” she said. “That’s good. Every additional day helps.”
