“I’m asking you to preserve it until we know whether he’s compromised.”
Diana looked at the tablet.
Then she turned it off.
“All right.”
Seraphina stepped away from the bed.
“What happens to Julian?”
The question carried more pain than Audrey expected.
“He signed the transfers,” Audrey said. “Whatever else is true, that part remains.”
“He may have been following orders.”
“He locked his pregnant wife in a restroom because he was afraid she would interrupt a wedding.”
Seraphina lowered her eyes.
Audrey’s voice softened, but only slightly.
“Not every wrong decision comes from a criminal conspiracy.”
Seraphina nodded.
“I know.”
For once, there was no argument between them.
Only the recognition that Julian’s choices belonged to him.
A nurse returned, and Diana guided Seraphina toward the door.
Before leaving, Seraphina looked back.
“I am sorry.”
Audrey did not say she forgave her.
She was not ready.
But she did not look away.
“I believe you are,” she said.
Seraphina’s eyes filled, and she left.
Diana remained at the doorway.
