“I’ll station someone outside.”
“Someone you trust?”
“Yes.”
Audrey glanced at the dark tablet.
“Does anyone know you came here?”
“My team does.”
“Does Martin?”
Diana hesitated.
“He called ten minutes ago.”
Audrey went still.
“What did he want?”
“He asked whether you had regained consciousness.”
“I never lost consciousness.”
“I know.”
The monitor beside the bed continued to pulse.
Diana stepped into the hallway and closed the door behind her.
For the first time since the ambulance arrived, Audrey was alone.
She leaned back against the pillow.
The medication made her limbs heavy, but her mind remained alert.
She thought about Julian.
About Seraphina.
About Owen’s warning.
About Martin Keene.
