“Audrey, you have had a traumatic night. You are medicated, exhausted, and under enormous emotional pressure.”
The words were reasonable.
That made them dangerous.
“You taught me never to answer a question that wasn’t asked,” she said. “I asked who told you I had lost consciousness.”
Martin’s voice became softer.
“Open the door, and we’ll talk.”
“No.”
Another silence.
Then Martin said, “Agent Cruz, remove yourself from this matter.”
Diana answered immediately.
“I cannot do that.”
“You are suspended from the investigation pending review.”
“You don’t have the authority to suspend me.”
“I just spoke to the deputy commissioner.”
“Then he can tell me himself.”
Audrey looked toward the phone beneath the pillow.
It vibrated.
She pulled it out carefully.
A new photograph appeared.
Diana standing outside the room.
Martin beside her.
Elena near the nurses’ station.
The image had been taken from above.
From inside the hallway.
Below it were four words.
LOOK AT HIS BRIEFCASE.
