Audrey gasped.
Emergency lights flickered red along the base of the wall.
The room filled with distant alarms.
“Nurse!” Audrey shouted.
The door handle moved.
She had locked it, but someone pushed hard from the other side.
“Open the door!” Elena called. “The floor systems have lost power.”
Audrey hesitated only a second.
Her baby’s monitor was silent.
She unlocked the door.
Elena rushed in with a portable flashlight, followed by Diana.
Martin was no longer in the hallway.
“Where did he go?” Audrey demanded.
Diana looked toward the stairwell.
“He ran when the power failed.”
“You let him leave?”
“I chose you.”
Elena moved quickly to the monitor and checked the connections.
“It’s the outlet, not the equipment.”
She pulled the emergency cord from the wall panel and attached a backup battery.
The screen came alive.
For one terrible second, there was only static.
