A humble maid who had spent years serving a powerful millionaire family was suddenly accused of stealing an invaluable piece of jewelry

Adam rubbed his forehead.

“You had access.”

“So did other people.”

“You knew about the necklace.”

“So did everyone in this house.”

Margaret stepped forward.

“Enough.”

Clara turned toward her.

Margaret’s voice hardened.

“You should be grateful Adam is giving you the opportunity to return it quietly.”

Clara stared at her.

“Return something I did not take?”

“Your situation will become much worse if police become involved.”

“My situation?”

Clara laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“My situation is that after thirteen years you think being poor makes me a thief.”

Adam stood.

“Clara.”

Her eyes moved toward him.

She desperately wanted him to say he believed her.

He did not.

Instead, he looked down.

“I think you should leave tonight while we investigate.”

The words struck harder than Margaret’s accusation.

Clara’s voice trembled.
