“Leave?”
“For now.”
Margaret answered for him.
“Your employment is terminated.”
Clara’s eyes filled.
Adam winced but did not contradict his mother.
“I raised your son through the worst years of his life, and you cannot even tell me you believe I did not steal from you.”
Adam’s jaw tightened.
“This isn’t about Idan.”
“It is about what kind of person you think I am.”
No answer came.
That was her answer.
Clara removed her house keys from her pocket and placed them on Adam’s desk.
The metal struck the polished wood with a small, final sound.
She walked upstairs to collect her coat.
Idan found her near the servants’ entrance.
“Clari?”
He looked from her coat to the suitcase beside her.
“Where are you going?”
Clara crouched quickly.
Her tears threatened to fall.
“I have to go home.”
“When are you coming back?”
She could not answer.
