I’m not going to have you thrown out. That’s not who Dad raised me to be.

You can stay. You can watch me get married. As a mirror. What she does with it is up to her.”

PART 5 — FINAL

I walked my daughter down the aisle twenty minutes later.

My hands were shaking. Adele squeezed my arm and whispered, “Breathe, Dad. You’ve done harder things than this. You did all of it.”

I gave her away to a good man — a genuinely good one, I’d checked, the way a father of six daughters checks — and I sat in the front row where I’d sat for fifteen years of recitals and plays and graduations, and I watched my oldest girl get married, and the seat beside me was empty, and for the first time in fifteen years, the empty seat didn’t hurt.

Because it wasn’t a mother-shaped hole anymore.

It was just an empty chair, next to a father who’d never once left.

Here’s what happened after.

Maya never reached out again. I heard, through the long grapevine of a small town, that she moved to another state. The box, I’m told, she kept. I hope Adele was right. I hope it became a mirror. I’ve made my peace with never knowing.

My other five girls were at that wedding — Grace, Emma, Sophie, Lily, and June, who’s fifteen now, the baby I held while her mother packed suitcases.

June asked me that night, “Dad, do you wish she’d stayed?”

I thought about it honestly.

“No,” I said. “Because if she’d stayed, I’d have spent fifteen years being half of your parents.

Instead I got to be all of them.

I wouldn’t trade that. Not for anything. Not even to make it easier.”

June hugged me so hard I lost my balance.

Adele and her husband gave me the best gift at the reception, though they didn’t know it was a gift.

They announced they were staying in town. Close.

“Somebody’s got to help you with June’s teenage years,” Adele said. “You’re going to need backup. And you’re not doing the next four years of pink alone.”

All six of my girls come home for Sunday dinner now.

It’s chaos. It’s loud. There are always at least three arguments and one of them is always about the bathroom.

It’s the best thing I’ve ever built, and I built it out of double shifts and library books and birthday cards written at midnight.

I kept one of those cards, by the way.

The first one. Adele’s sixth birthday. “Love, Mom,” in my handwriting.

I don’t keep it out of sadness.

I keep it because it reminds me of the man I had to become — a father who loved his daughters so much he was willing to be their mother too, for as long as they needed it.

Adele framed it for me last Christmas.

Underneath the card, she’d added a small plaque.

It says: “The love was always real. We just found out who it came from.”

They tried to leave us with nothing.

She walked out for a car and an island and a clean start.

She got her clean start.

And I got everything.

Six daughters. A house full of Sunday noise. A framed birthday card. And a front-row seat, for the rest of my life, to the six best people I have ever known.

She threw us away.

We turned out to be the treasure.

“So here’s what I don’t understand,” Adele said, and now, for the first time, her voice had an edge. “You…

[1

post-2016","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
