7. Sleep Problems or Unusual Dreams
Some people taking beta blockers report changes in sleep.
Possible experiences can include:
- Difficulty falling asleep
- Restless sleep
- Vivid dreams
- Nightmares
- Waking more frequently
Not everyone
taking metoprolol experiences these effects, and sleep problems can have many other explanations.
Caffeine, alcohol, stress, anxiety, irregular sleep schedules, sleep apnea, other medications, and numerous health conditions can all interfere with sleep.
If a sleep problem started around the same time as beginning metoprolol or changing the dose, make a note of the timing and discuss it with your healthcare professional.
Do not discontinue the medication simply because you experience an unusual dream or a few poor nights of sleep.
8. Depression or Mood Changes
Mood changes have sometimes
been reported by people taking beta blockers.
Possible symptoms may include:
- Low mood
- Loss of interest in usual activities
- Unusual sadness
- Changes in motivation
- Changes in energy
