“I want a meeting,” I said. “Him, his parents, and Alexis if she wants front-row seats. I want it at your office. And I want them to understand exactly what they threw out.
Not out of revenge, Ruth.
Out of accuracy.

The meeting happened eight days later.
Ruth’s conference room. A long table. And I made sure, this time, that I was the one who got to choose who sat where.
Desmond came expecting a divorce negotiation he assumed he’d dominate. He brought his own lawyer, and — because arrogance travels in packs — he brought his parents, Gerald and Loretta, who apparently could not resist watching me be handled.
Alexis came too.
I almost admired the audacity.
Desmond opened, smug, before we’d even sat down. “Simone, let’s be adults. You can keep your car and your personal savings. The house and the business are mine. Let’s not drag this out.”
“Actually,” I said, “let’s talk about the business.”
I nodded to Ruth, who slid the first document across the table.
“This is the loan Simone spent four years ‘paying off,'” Ruth said. “The $450,000 note against Kessler Supply. I’d direct your attention to the current holder of the note.”
Desmond glanced at it, impatient. “Yes, the bank, she paid the—”
“Read the holder, Mr. Kessler.”
He read it.
