“After I gave birth, I brought my baby to meet the grandpa who raised me — but the moment he saw her face, he burst into tears and said, “This is impossible. You have no idea what you’ve done.” My grandpa was the only father I ever had after my parents died in a car crash. So when I got pregnant at 27 and the man I loved disappeared the same night I told him, Grandpa was the one who held me together. He had never met Caleb. I had kept putting off introducing them, telling …

He had vanished the same night I told him I was pregnant.

No note.

No answered calls.

Nothing.

The worst part was that there had been no warning.

When I showed him the pregnancy test, Caleb stared at it for several seconds before looking at me.

“Are you okay?”

“I don’t know.”

He took my hand. “Then we’ll figure it out.”

“You’re not scared?”

“Terrified.”

I laughed through my tears.

He kissed my forehead before leaving that evening and told me he would call in the morning.

He didn’t.

By noon, my messages were unread.

By evening, his phone went directly to voicemail.

The following morning, I drove to his apartment.

Half his closet was empty.

That was when I understood this wasn’t panic.

Caleb hadn’t simply become overwhelmed and forgotten to call.

He had gone somewhere on purpose.

I kept waiting until sometime around my fifth month, when Grandpa Walter finished sanding the crib in his garage and told me we would be fine, just the three of us.
