Are dozens of birds flying together? ChooseBird Feeders
Those little details can provide much more information than altitude alone.
Why Do Birds Fly Low?
They’re Searching for Food
One of the simplest explanations is food.
Many birds feed on insects, and insects can be especially abundant close to the ground, around grass, gardens, fields, ponds, and waterways.
You may see birds repeatedly swooping downward, turning sharply, and then climbing again.

Weather
insects
That’s often a sign they’re hunting rather than predicting the weather.
And watching a flock chase insects can be quite a show!
They’re Avoiding Strong Winds
Wind can dramatically affect bird flight.
When strong winds are present, some birds may fly
lower to avoid more turbulent air at higher elevations.
They may also use trees, buildings, hills, or other structures as shelter from the wind.
So if you notice birds suddenly flying lower on a particularly windy day, there may be nothing mysterious happening at all.
They’re About to Land
Birds need to come down eventually! ChooseBird Feeders
If they’re approaching a tree, nest, feeding area, rooftop, field, or body of water, they may gradually lower their altitude.
A bird flying low may simply be getting ready to land.
They’re Traveling
Through a Familiar Route
Birds don’t always fly at the same height throughout an entire journey.
A flock might travel higher over one area and then descend as it approaches a feeding ground, nesting site, roost, or water source.
