Eight minutes after our divorce became official, my ex-husband looked at me with a smug little smile and said I was walking away with nothing. But as I left with my children and two passports in my hand, he had no idea the folder waiting in my car was about to destroy the future his family had already begun celebrating.

Dr. Vance adjusted his glasses and looked at the ultrasound screen once more, then back at Bradley and Tiffany. Outside the door, the muffled laughter of Margaret, Brittany, and the aunts faded instantly as two uniformed security officers and a sharp-suited man from the hospital’s legal team stepped into the hallway.

“Dr. Vance,” Bradley’s voice cracked, dropping all the swagger he had used just ninety minutes ago in the mediator’s office. “What is the meaning of this? Why are legal and security here? Is my son okay?”

Dr. Vance clicked a button on his keyboard, freezing a specific frame on the high-definition monitor.

“Mr. Bradley,” the doctor said calmly, his tone devoid of any warmth. “First, as a matter of hospital compliance and active legal notification, I am required to inform you that this ultrasound appointment was requested for expedited review under court subpoena. Second… regarding the fetal development.”
