Five minutes after our divorce became final, my husband looked me in the eyes and said, “Take the girls, Lena. I have a son coming now.” He thought he was leaving behind an ordinary wife and two daughters he no longer needed—but by that afternoon, he would discover I was a U.S. Army colonel, and the “heir” his entire family was celebrating might not even be his. – usnews

My granddaughters.

Interesting.

For years, Vivian introduced Madeline and Sophie by mentioning how unfortunate it was that Preston “never got his boy.”

Now they mattered.

I deleted the message.

At 1:26, another voicemail arrived.

This one was Preston.

“Brielle admitted there was someone else.”

I froze.

He continued.

“She says it happened once. Before she and I were official.”

A long pause.

“But we were already together.”

His voice sounded hollow.

“She says she didn’t tell me because she thought the baby was mine.”

Another pause.

Then something stranger.

“She won’t tell me who he is.”

I listened to the message twice.

Not because I enjoyed his pain.

I didn’t.

But because I recognized the voice.

It was the same voice I had used seven months earlier when I discovered Preston’s hotel receipt from Charleston.

The same shock.

The same disbelief.

The same desperate attempt to reorganize reality into something less humiliating.
