For ten years I was his wife in every way except for one thing: our official marriage. When I asked for a signature, he laughed, “It’s just a piece of paper.”

At five in the morning I found a small apartment that I could rent temporarily.

At six, my suitcase was at the front door.

I left the briefcase on the kitchen table.

When Michael entered the kitchen yawning, to see his morning coffee as usual, I have suddenly stopped.

There was no coffee.

Instead, there were bank documents, confirmation of changes in insurance and a copy of the home’s ownership deed.

I left a brief note in the archive:

“You were right. Paper Doesn’t change anything when you don’t need it. But it changes everything when he decides who owns the house, the money and the future.”

Office supplies

Michael picked up the document.

The blood drained from his face.

“What does that mean?”

I took my bag.

“It’s just a card paper” Michael.

“You mean it? Do you want to waste ten years through a conversation?
