“There is more?”
He nodded toward Mason.
“Tell her.”
Mason shook his head.
“Tomorrow.”
“Mason.”
“George.”
The old man stared him down.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Finally Mason sighed.
“Fine.”
He walked toward the counter.
Diane handed him a folder.
Mason brought it to me.
“Read page one.”
“What is it?”
“Page one says.”
Of course it did.
I opened the folder.
At first, all I saw were legal terms.
Articles.
Property.
Transfer.
Trust.
Miller’s Hospitality Holdings.
I read the first paragraph again.
Then the second.
Then I looked up.
“I don’t understand.”
Hannah began crying again.
I pointed at her.
“You need to stop doing that before you explain things.”
“Sorry.”
“What is this?”
Mason answered.
“The diner.”
“What about it?”
“I own it.”
The room exploded.
Cheering.
Whistles.
Applause.
Mason flinched and covered his ears.
Immediately the room quieted.
I stared at him.
“You what?”
