Restaurant redesigns.
Peer-support programs.
Transportation.
Research conducted in partnership with autistic adults rather than simply about them.
My hands shook.
“You knew?”
“Since his lawyer came.”
“When?”
“Three weeks ago.”
“And Hannah?”
“Yes.”
“David?”
“No.”
Finally.
Something David hadn’t known.
I smiled despite myself.
“So yesterday, when everyone was revealing nearly two million dollars…”
“That did not include the endowment.”
I stared at my son.
“You are telling me Same Table has twenty-four million dollars.”
“Technically, the Bell Foundation controls the endowment.”
“Of course technically.”
“We receive distributions.”
“Mason.”
“Yes?”
“Please let me have the dramatic version once.”
He thought about that.
“Okay.”
I stood.
Walked to the hallway.
Then came back.
“Twenty-four million dollars?!”
Mason burst out laughing.
Not a polite laugh.
A full laugh.
Head back.
Eyes closed.
The sound stopped me.
Mason did not laugh that way often.
I began laughing too.
Soon we were both sitting on the floor.
