He Ordered Her Out of the Lake House—Then Learned It Was Hers

She had called it one weekend, as though the length of the intrusion mattered more than the betrayal that made it possible.

Neither of them understood what my silence meant.

They did not know that the woman they had mocked as a freeloader had spent eleven years serving in the Army.

They did not know I had recently been promoted to colonel.

They did not know I led one of the Army’s most respected operational units.

Most important, they did not understand that I had no intention of using that position to frighten them or win a personal argument.

I did not need to.

The house was mine. The records were clear. Ryan had stated his position in front of witnesses, and Jessica had supported him.

All I had done was make three calls and follow the proper steps.

I looked through the windshield toward the road.

A few minutes earlier, I had arrived at the lake house hoping to spend the weekend alone. Now I was sitting beneath a row of oak trees while other people occupied my home and celebrated the fact that they had driven me away.
