Every window, chair, mug, and floorboard belonged to me.
When I was away, a property management company checked the house and handled routine maintenance. My sister, Jessica, also had a spare key for emergencies.
I had trusted her with it because she was my older sister.
I never imagined she would use that key to hand my home over to her husband’s relatives.
Two days before my leave began, I called Jessica and told her I had finally secured seventy-two hours off after months away.
“I’m going straight to the lake house,” I said. “I need somewhere quiet enough to remember what silence sounds like.”
She laughed lightly and told me I deserved the break.
“Enjoy it,” she said. “Try not to answer your phone the whole time.”
Not once did she mention Ryan’s family reunion.
Not once did she tell me she had given anyone permission to stay there.
