On the morning of the wedding, my mother came to pick her up. Before they left, Mom looked at me and started criticizing me all over again. She actually called me a terrible sister because I refused to attend the wedding and “support the family.”
I didn’t even bother arguing. I no longer had the energy.
After Amelia left, I stayed home with my other three children. We curled up together on the couch beneath a large blanket and turned on their favorite cartoon. I tried to focus only on them.
I tried not to picture Ryan standing at the altar.
I tried not to imagine my sister walking toward him wearing a wedding dress.
And I tried not to think about my parents sitting there smiling proudly while everyone celebrated a relationship that had begun by destroying mine.
More than anything, I just wanted the day to end.
