I married a dying man because it was his final wish — after his funeral, his lawyer knocked on my door and said: “”He made me wait until today to tell you WHO HE REALLY WAS.

L.

E.

C.

My breath caught.

“Who lived here?”

Daniel took out a ring of keys.

“Carl’s family.”

He unlocked the front door.

The air inside smelled of cedar, dust, and old smoke. White sheets covered the furniture. A stone fireplace occupied one wall, and faded blue curtains framed the lake.

I stepped inside slowly.

Each object seemed to whisper to me.

A brass bell beside the door.

A deep scratch on the dining table.

A painted tin boat above the mantel.

Then I noticed three lines marked on the wooden frame of the kitchen entrance. Beside each line was a name and a date.

Lucas — age seven

Evelyn — age six

Claire — age three

Claire.

My full name was Claire Elaine Morgan.

I placed my fingertips against the lowest line.

“Daniel.”

He had gone pale.

“My mother told me I was born in Westbridge.”

“She lied.”

“Who are Lucas and Evelyn?”
